With a voice mighty enough to make the walls of Jericho come tumbling down, contemporary gospel songstress Yolanda Adams makes an equally as powerful debut on Elektra Records with Mountain High Valley Low. Although she is literally the first lady of gospel on Elektra, three of her previous recordings, Yolanda Live in Washington, More than a Melody, and Save the World, garnered her Grammy nominations in the Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album category. Adams is no stranger in the gospel arena, but she is bound to capture an even broader audience with Mountain High Valley Low. The hip-hop tinged "Time to Change" (which includes DJ scratches), the guitar-laced "Yeah," the danceable "Wherever You Are," and the soulful "He'll Arrive (Coming Back)," featuring Kelly Price, unite positive messages with beats to groove to. No need to throw the church fan at Adams, though--she hasn't abandoned her traditional roots. The inspirational "That Name" and the electrifying, "In the Midst of It All" showcase not only her ability to sing with clarity and diction, but also her gift for stirring the soul.
