Pacific Northwest musicians The Winterlings began their new album, You Are Acres, while being serenaded by a pack of wild coyotes. “They were outside our motorhome window, howling like cats in a trash can,” Wolff says. “It was delightful.” When Amanda Birdsall and Wolff Bowden met at a Buddhist fire ritual, Amanda had abandoned a PHD program in psychology to work on farms and write songs. Wolff was a visual artist who couldn’t play a single chord. They sold their cars, bought a van, headed west and gave birth to a howling little family of songs. Praised by Paste and called an “undeniable gem” by No Depression, the Winterlings’ first album, The Animal Groom sent them touring from NYC to Washington State where they lived in their motorhome and wrote You Are Acres. From the duel between death and laughter in “Opening Line” to a child lashed to her family tree in “Easter Dress,” the songs go deep and stay there. Yet, the music is often celebratory, even jubilant. Lines like: “Underneath the cypress trees we run, comets leaving trails of breath and mud,” transform a fleeting moment into a cosmic metaphor in “When We Were Young,” a song which suggests we were alive in the cells of our ancestors long before we were born. Foot-stomping environmental anthem “While We Were Sleeping” features a rollicking fiddle solo accompanied by Dixieland piano and horns. Title track, Acres, is a haunted Northwest Love song about the interface between the gravel of the outer world and the glaciers of emotion lurking under our skin. The duo wrote, recorded and produced You Are Acres entirely in their home studio, playing a dozen instruments and taking turns singing lead, building bonfires of sound to dance and dream beside.
