Clint Eastwood uses his clout in the right way. For the soundtrack to his new film Space Cowboys Eastwood has corralled a host of top-notch jazz artists to contribute to the soundtrack. Some performances are unexpected to say the least: pianist Brad Mehldau essaying Neil Young's "Old Man, and Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years"; Joshua Redman taking on the Ray Charles hit "Hit the Road Jack"; organist Larry Goldings, joined by James Brown vets Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, grooving on the old Stax hit "Last Night." Less surprising, though just as effective, are Redman's spin through the Sinatra classics "The Second Time Around" and "The Best Is Yet to Come." Willie Nelson also gets in the swing of things with touching versions of "Young at Heart" and "Still Crazy After All These Years." And to top it all off, there's Sinatra himself on a snappy "Fly Me to the Moon" in front of Count Basie's always- swinging orchestra.
