Shape magazine organized the Fitness Music series with the intention of providing the perfect music for 60-minute workouts. Each tape is designed for nonstop workouts, so the music is non-stop -- each song is segued together -- and vaguely mirrors a workout, with warm-up and cool-down sections to the music. The liner notes also included a number of fitness tips, as well as a BPM chart. Musically, the tapes each follow a particular style. In the case of Cardio 2, the music is all album-oriented hard rock and pop-rock from the late '70s and early '80s. Among the feautred songs are Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care of Business," Huey Lewis & the News' "The Heart of Rock and Roll," Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible," Missing Persons' "Walking in L.A.," the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove," Pat Benatar's "All Fired Up," Sammy Hagar's "I've Done Everything for You," Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend," Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero" and Billy Squier's "Everybody Wants You." It's a solid selection of tunes, and they help make Shape: Cardio 2 a successful exercise tape.
