AUSTRALIAN IMPORT: Display image may vary since this item is an import Although he's managed by the same folks that handle the careers of Jessica and Ashlee Simpson -- and counts the latter among his ex-paramours -- this 20-ish singer-guitarist isn't just another glossy popster. Yes, he's got pin-up looks and a fair amount of coy attitude, but he's also a surprisingly nuanced songwriter and guitarist, as evidenced by this full-length bow, which falls squarely in the Jason Mraz/John Mayer end of the sonic spectrum. He lists towards the former on songs like the acoustic-but-rhythmic "Exit to Exit," which is buoyed by a soaring chorus and a deft, memorable guitar hook that propels the dusky tale. Romance comes to the fore on "True," a whisper-sweet-nothings ballad that's likely to inspire many a slow dance come prom season. The disc is certainly not without its flaws -- Cabrera's tenor is a bit too pure and innocent to pull off the sort of dissipation he attempts with "On the Way Down" -- but thanks to the production of Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznik and Cabrera's easygoing delivery, Take It All Away racks up far more hits than misses.
