Born in Barcelona, Montserrat Caballe studied at the prestigious Liceu Conservatory and made her professional debut in Basel, Switzerland in 1956 as Mimi in Puccini's La boheme with the Basel Opera Company. However, it was in 1965 that Caballe was launched into stardom when she replaced an ailing Marilyn Horne in Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall, having learned the role in less than a month. It was also the year that she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Through the years, Caballé developed a more dramatic style of delivery and greater vocal expressivity that enhanced her performances as Tosca, which she sang with Pavarotti in 1978, and Bellini's Norma, a role that she made her own. Caballe's fame reached beyond the classical sphere and into the pop world in 1988 when she had a hit single with "Barcelona," duetting with Queen's frontman, Freddie Mercury, that became the anthem of the 1992 Olympic Games. The Diva, a new 6-CD box set, includes Caballe's amazing and unforgettable performances from throughout her illustrious career.
