"MR. DIZZY GILLESPIE: A MUSICIAN IN JAZZ HISTORY"
Not only an exceptional and outstanding performer, he is a pioneer and creator of a style, the Bebop of the 40's, and fully responsible for the introduction of the jazz afro-cuban fusion (later known as Latin Jazz) in the North American music scene. He had a vision of an exuberant blend: powerful afro-cuban percussion and melodic elements of jazz. And into his life came a man, a single man named Chano. Their communication was immediate. No Language barriers could stop them from conceiving this exciting offspring from the best of both worlds. They loved each other deeply and together wrote a page in music history. As a young man in Cuba, I always admired his work and felt proud of his association with Chano Pozo. Classics of Latin jazz such as "Manteca," "Tin Tin Deo," and many others will always be representative of an important moment in music history. Later on, life gave me the joy of working with him. This album meansso much to me that words simply cannot express my feelings. I have taken, for a few hours, the place of Chano Pozo and, like him, I have been one mind, one soul with this giant, this wonderful human being named Dizzy.
