California-based rockers Letter Kills deliver a potent mix of modern emo-core and old-school punk, with just a hint of bluesy 1970s guitar rock. Landing mid-way between the hard-edged sound favored by contemporaries Story of the Year and the more accessible sounds made famous by Hoobastank, the So-Cal band injects bit of fun into an often dead-serious genre. Vocalist Matt Shelton can belt out an angst-ridden moan with the best of them, but that doesn't stop him from inserting the occasional hard-rock shout or Jello Biafra-esque snarl. On "Whatever It Takes," the group reaches back even further for inspiration, forging a loud and trashy sound that calls NYC punk godfathers the Dictators. An energetic and joyous debut, THE BRIDGE should appeal to clean-cut emo kids and tattooed rockers alike.
