With a cocksure, salacious flow that could make Dolemite blush, Kurupt delivers rapid-fire gangsta rhymes that aren't for the faint of heart. The Philly-native/ LA-transplant first made waves in the early-'90s as one half of the Snoop Dogg-formulated duo, Tha Dogg Pound. Since then, Kurupt has built his reputation on raw, unadulterated G-funk rap with an East Coast penchant for marvelous metaphors. His third solo album, Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey, reprises the familiar themes of biggin' up his West Coast homies (Snoop, Nate Dogg, and his Dogg Pound partner Daz appear on the disc), flipping a middle-finger to unsavory females, and throwing a mercilessly unending slew of chest-thumping brag rhymes at his competitors, both real and imagined. Like Dr. Dre on his misogynistic album 2001, Kurupt makes even the most disrespectful barrages sound funky -- with the help of seamless production. On "The Hardest...," he holds his own with seasoned battle rhymers MC Ren and Xzibit over guitar-licks and flutes. On that smoothed-out groove, which features Nate Dogg's velvety vocals, Kurupt shocks eardrums with jarring lyrics such as: "Stick something fat up in each single bitch."
