With huge hooks suitably stripped down and sharp production, and an infectious abundance of hometown pride, the Bay Area's hyphy movement took over the urban party just as the South's crunk sound began to wear out its welcome somewhere in the middle of 2006. Coming from a label as big as TVT, Hyphy Hitz is a surprisingly aware collection, covering enough of the big names and adding the proper amount of underground heat to be considered informed. Three verses into the opening "Yadadamean" from the A'z and the listener is introduced to the kind of slang slinging that's so important to hyphy. Godfather E-40, who has been promising to publish his own hyphy dictionary for years, is well represented in guest appearances and by his own "Gouda." The man who coined the term by turning the word "hyper" into "hyphy," Keak da Sneak, is also heavy on the track list and in the addition of the late Mac Dre, the popular Federation, and the MVP of 2006, Mistah FAB, makes the lineup all-star. You could ask for some Too Short or any number of upstarts, but you can't deny the collection is one of the first necessary hyphy comps to appear outside the underground world of mixtapes.
