Germany's Sonorama label does it again. Dusty Vibes unearths the earliest sides by Swiss composer, saxophonist, electronic musician, and psychologist Bruno Spoerri, leading his own bands and playing saxophones in Hans Kennel's All Stars. All nine of these tracks are previously unreleased; they were discovered in the archives of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (Radio DRS), which had broadcast programs of bop and hard bop sessions in the early and mid-'60s. Indeed, coming from a period when Swiss musicians were aping their American counterparts note for note, the material heard here by Kennel's quartet, and Spoerri's for that matter, are the earliest attempts to create an original sound, though they remain heavily indebted to American jazz. Spoerri appears on all nine tracks, while Kennel appears on about half. Along with with solid -- if not wildly imaginative -- readings of Charles Mingus' "Moanin'" and Ornette Coleman's "When Will the Blues Leave," there are original pieces. One of the odder -- and more welcome -- surprises here is the addition of Joel Vandroogenbroeck (founder of Brainticket) on piano on three selections and as the composer of one. Dusty Vibes reveals that Spoerri was in full possession of his mature voice as an instrumentalist, despite the limitations of form. His own compositions here, the title track, "The Eleven Beat Blues," and "Ballad on a Row" are all highlights on the set.
