A DJ Khaled beat is the musical equivalent of a multi-million-dollar Miami mansion. Awe-inspiring and ostentatious, these palaces can accommodate hundreds of guests at a time, and maybe that’s what accounts for Khaled’s penchant for posse cuts. “Out Here Grindin’” and “Final Warning” are structured for maximum drama, so that each rapper’s appearance (it is not uncommon for six or eight to share one song) propels the song forward with a new burst of energy, like an injection of nitro into a race car. As much as Khaled enjoys working with an ensemble cast, the results are riveting when he gives a song over to a single rapper. On “I’m On” Nas’ introspective flow grips the track like Spiderman to a skyscraper, while Game brings his trademark emotion to the faintly bluesy stomp of “Red Light.” Every song on We Global puts a premium on fortitude and melodrama, and while similar-minded tracks usually collapse under their own weight, DJ Khaled is one of the few producers who can actually deliver on his astronomical aspirations.
