Ten years on and still smokin', Cypress Hill are one of the most successful and prolific groups in the history of West Coast hip-hop. While they've largely reneged on the artistic promise of their early-'90s debut, Cypress Hill have cashed in on the rap-metal trend as no hip-hop act have. The good news is that the Los Angeles outfit's sixth full-length should please rap and rock fans alike; in fact, it's their hottest and most consistent joint since 1993's Black Sunday. Stoned Raiders combines the crossover alt-metal crunch of 2000's Skull & Bones with the group's weed-obsessed wordplay and the trademark DJ Muggs beats that made the Hill's 1991 debut a classic. Tracks such as the menacing first single, "Trouble," and "Amplified" find the group living up to the promise of Skull & Bones's "Rock Superstar" with their strongest guitar-driven work yet, while "L.I.F.E.," featuring Dr. Dre vocalist Kokane, recalls the guitar-powered soul of Maggot Brain-era Funkadelic. Those who prefer to wax nostalgic on some of that old-school Cypress Hill flavor should check the autobiographical "Kronologik," featuring Dogg Pound alum Kurupt, or the three-way verbal hash session between B-Real, Redman, and Method Man on the aptly titled "Red, Meth & B." Here is something you can understand: Cypress Hill are back in full force, and it doesn't look as if they're going anywhere anytime soon.
