CLIMB AGAINST THE ODDS opens with the hard-won optimism of Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Happy Girl" and concludes with the hypnotic and almost wordless "Fulani Chant" by Sweet Honey in the Rock. The distance -- and the connections-- between these two songs could be a metaphor for the revelations of the journey they celebrate, the trek of 12 women, all touched in one way or another by breast cancer, on a climb up Alaska's Mount McKinley. Their expedition is the subject of a documentary film airing on PBS. Illuminated by the music of Nanci Griffith ("Across the Great Divide"), Mary Chapin Carpenter ("Why Walk When You Can Fly"), Indigo Girls ("Everything in Its Own Time"), and Celine Dion ("Love Can Move Mountains"), the film is motivated by sisterly concern.
