Chris LeDoux set out to please himself and his audience with Cowboy. The album is comprised of new recordings of songs LeDoux originally cut back in the days when he was making a name for himself on the rodeo circuit singing songs from his homemade cassettes -- and wowing a young Garth Brooks, who would subsequently use his clout to help LeDoux gain a Capitol contract. Cowboy's songs reflect the grit and grist of the rodeo rider's hardscrabble life, the acutely observed "He Rides Wild Horses" being foremost among equals in this regard. That track exemplifies LeDoux's sound in the clean, gimmick-free production; the sharp, basic band support; and the folksy vocals lending the collection the straightfoward intimacy of tales told around the campfire.
