International edition of the highly anticipated 2003 solo album debut from the Destiny's Child front woman includes the hidden bonus track, 'Daddy', which appears on the US version as well, plus two additional bonus cuts, 'Work It Out' (Top 10 solo single from 'Austin Powers In Goldmember') & '03' Bonnie & Clyde' (feat. Jay-Z). 17 tracks. Columbia. Like the best booty-shakin' go-go jam think E.U.'s "Da Butt" or DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat", "Crazy in Love" -- the spastic drum- and horn-propelled lead single from Beyoncé Knowles's long-awaited solo disc -- commands listeners to move somethin'. And the lust fest doesn't stop there. Although she's beckoned us to "say my name, say my name" before, somehow when Beyoncé purrs, "I'm feeling sexy / I want to hear you say my name, boy," on "Naughty Girl" which snags lyrics from Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby", the request sounds, well, naughtier. From the sound of those scintillating songs and one look at the steamy video for "Crazy in Love", it's obvious that this hormone-fueled and Dangerously in Love Beyoncé is ready to shed her good-girl image -- a welcome makeover for fans who've been infatuated with the caramel vixen and her powerhouse pipes since she proclaimed her bootylicious-ness back in 2001. Musically, however, the disc doesn't quite sustain the sexually charged energy of the lead single. Although Knowles wrangled top-shelf collaborations with dancehall star Sean Paul the Hindi-meets-hip-hop-driven "Bad Boy", Missy Elliott the playful "Signs", OutKast's Big Boi the Dirty South dirge "Hip Hop Star", and Luther Vandross a remake of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's duet "The Closer I Get to You," also found on Vandross's Dance with My Father, the disc was executive-produced by Beyoncé's dad, Matthew Knowles, who ensures it has the generic, CCM-cum-pop-tinged R&B production quality of all Destiny's Child projects. Even so, when the 21-year-old's dynamic vocals take center stage, as on the "Strawberry Letter 23"inspired "Be with You," the power ballad title track, and the jazzy "Gift from Virgo," her star shines so brightly that it nearly implodes. It may not be history making -- as her beau, Jay-Z, boasts on "Crazy in Love" -- but with the intimate Dangerously in Love, a grown-up Beyoncé takes catwalk-worthy strides toward controlling her own destiny.
